A interpretação e preocupação com as comunidades lusófonas, a abordagem multidisciplinar aos problemas sociais e o papel inegável dos artistas marcaram o discurso de abertura da XIII edição do Congresso da SOPCOM.
Depois de 17 anos, Braga volta a receber o evento cuja abertura contou com várias participações, tais como a de Madalena Oliveira (Presidente da Sopcom), Luís António Santos (Diretor-adjunto do CECS), Paula Remoaldo (Presidente do Instituto de Ciências Sociais) e Rui Vieira de Castro (Reitor da Universidade do Minho). Além das ilustres figuras do campo da comunicação, a abertura ficou ainda marcada pela presença, em formato vídeo, de Pedro Adão e Silva, o Ministro da Cultura.
Entre os vários discursos, que contaram com mais de uma centena de pessoas na audiência, realçou-se também a importância da comunicação como um dos pilares da democracia e ainda a celebração dos 50 anos desde a fundação da Universidade do Minho.
